Review: Wicked Ties (Wicked Lovers series Book 1) by Shayla Black
I’ve been wanting to read Wicked Ties by Shila Black for a long time, and I finally got around to doing just that last week. I’d always heard great things about the book, and Ms. Black as an author, and I wasn’t disappointed. What a great start to a best-selling BDSM erotic romance series, and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone interested in the genre.
I’ll start off my review with the characters, whom I found to be strong, intelligent, likeable and interesting. Morgan is the host of a sexy late-light cable talk show in Los Angeles called Turn Me On. She’s sort of a modern-day Dr. Ruth, with almost no topic off limits as she discusses a variety of sex-related topics with her listeners.
But Morgan has a few secrets that she doesn’t share with her radio audience. One is the fact that she’s being pursued by a relentless and frightening male stalker. This is a man who means to do her harm, and she’s constantly looking over her shoulder and trying to camouflage her appearance in public.
Another secret she’s hiding is the fact that she has a keen interest in BDSM sexual practices, and a secret yearning to be a submissive in a D/s relationship. These two interests lead her to the mysterious Master J, a practicing Dom whom she meets in an online chat room down in Texas while she’s visiting her brother. Master J promises to fill Morgan in on all the details of the BDSM culture, and they agree to meet for lunch in Lafayette to talk things over.
Master J turns out to be Jack Cole, the sexy male lead of the story. In addition to being an experienced Dom, Jack is also a personal security specialist (aka bodyguard), a skill that comes in handy as Morgan’s stalker shows up at the restaurant and gunfire interrupts their lunch. Jack gets Morgan out of the restaurant safely, and thus begins the relationship between the two.
Without giving away too much of the plot, Wicked Ties is an action/adventure story, revenge tale, and steamy BDSM erotic romance all rolled into one. Jack has a few secrets of his own, including his desire for revenge against Morgan’s fiancee, his long-time enemy. Jack decides to derail the couple’s marriage plans by seducing Morgan, and turning her into his submissive.
Jack’s been in the BDSM game for a lot time, and he instantly recognizes that Morgan secretly longs to be a Sub. And so he decides to help her on her journey. The fact that she suddenly needs a bodyguard only makes his job easier, as now he’ll be able to protect her and seduce her at the same time.
But as the two spend more and more time together, and their relationship grows, Jack begins to have real feelings for Morgan. They eventually fall in love, and they team up to defeat the stalker who’s determined to take Morgan down.
As for the sexual content of this story, make no mistake, this is a BDSM erotic romance. There are numerous steamy love scenes, but Ms. Black handles them tastefully, and there’s never a “hard core” or degrading feel to the sex acts. Each character stays true to form in the D/s dynamic, but the sex scenes shouldn’t be a turn-off for most erotic romance readers. It’s made abundantly clear that Jack’s true intention is to fulfill Morgan’s secret desires, and help her get over the idea that those desires only belong to “depraved” women.
All in all I would say that Wicked Ties by Shayla Black is a very satisfying read, and I’m looking forward to reading more books in this series. It’s all too rare to find an erotic romance where the characters and story are a match for the action between the sheets. And this is one of those stories.
